  • How to Watch Yellowstone Spinoff '1923' on Roku
by RokuGuide on December 20, 2022 at 12:27 am

1923, the second prequel to the wildly popular series Yellowstone, premiered December 18 on the Paramount+ streaming service in the U.S., and December 19 on Paramount+ in the U.K. and Australia. 1923 can be streamed on Roku and other supported devices with the Paramount+ app, which is available for 50% off an annual plan for the first year, with the first week free. That's only $24.99 for the full year. This offer ends January 2, 2023 and is available to new and returning subscribers. Monthly plans, and premium plans with your local CBS station live and the ability to download, are also available. 1923 is the latest creation from Academy Award nominee Taylor Sheridan. The original Yellowstone series, now in Season 5, is a modern-day Western that follows the Dutton family, owners of the largest ranch in Montana, as they deal with conflicts with land developers, a bordering Indian reservation, and the national park that shares the same name as the ranch. 1883, the first Yellowstone prequel, told the story of how the Dutton family arrived in Montana, traveling by wagon train with other pioneers in the years following the Civil War. 1923, starring Harrison Ford as Jacob Dutton and Helen Mirren as Cara Dutton, continues the family saga with a new generation battling pandemics, drought and locusts, Prohibition, and the Great Depression. . A trailer for the limited series can be streamed below.

  • Disney+ With Ads Is Now Available, but Not on Roku
by RokuGuide on December 13, 2022 at 10:37 pm

Disney+, the popular on-demand streaming video service, recently raised the price of it's ad-free service by three dollars to $10.99 a month. The old $7.99 plan, now known as Disney+ Basic, is still available, but now comes with ads. But if you're a Roku user, the ad-supported Basic plan is not yet available. You will need to subscribe to ad-free Disney+ or watch on a different streaming device. Disney offers the following information on its help pages: Disney+ Basic is not currently available on Roku devices. This means that viewers are unable to sign up for this plan on Roku devices or stream Disney+ on Roku devices if viewers have this plan or the Disney Bundle Duo Basic or Trio Basic. Streaming of Disney+ Basic (With Ads) is not available on Roku devices or the Microsoft Windows Desktop app. If you recently subscribed to an ad-supported Disney+ plan as a new or existing subscriber and are unable to view on your preferred device, you have the following options: Switch your subscription to one of our plans with ad-free Disney+: Disney+ Premium, or the Disney Bundle Trio Premium. Stream Disney+ content from a device that supports Disney+ with ads. Neither Disney nor Roku has offered an explanation as why Disney+ Basic is unavailable on Roku devices at launch, but it's probably safe to assume that it has to do sharing of ad revenue, as reported by Next TV. Other services have been unavailable on Roku, either missing at launch or temporary removed, due to revenue-sharing disputes. Notable examples are YouTube TV and AT&T TV (now DIRECTV Stream). As with those apps, Disney and Roku will likely come to an agreement in the near future (assuming revenue sharing is, in fact, the reason for Disney+ Basic being unavailable) and make ad-free Disney+ available on Roku devices. It would be in the interest of both Roku and Disney to come to an agreement. Deadline reported that research from Kantar found that about 23% of the approximately 46 million U.S. Disney+ subscribers would switch to the lower-cost ad-supported plan. Presumably, many of those subscribers who watch Disney+ on Roku would switch to a different streaming device. From Disney's viewpoint, however, Roku is the predominant streaming device currently in use, and it would be in Disney's interest to offer their ad-free service to Roku users.

by RokuGuide on November 3, 2022 at 10:28 pm

"Weird Al" Yankovic, the popular singer/songwriter who has entertained us since the 1970s with song parodies like "My Bologna" (a parody of "My Sharona"), "Another One Rides the Bus" ("Another Bites the Dust"), and "I Love Rocky Road" ("I Love Rock 'n' Roll"), is the subject of a new Roku Original. Weird: The Al Yankovic Story, a biopic starring Daniel Radcliffe as Yankovic, premieres November 4 on The Roku Channel, where it can be streamed for free. The film tells Al's story: "From a conventional upbringing where playing the accordion was a sin, Al rebelled and made his dream of changing the words to world-renowned songs come true. An instant success and sex symbol, Al lives an excessive lifestyle and pursues an infamous romance that nearly destroys him." Alongside Radcliffe, Evan Rachel Wood stars as a sociopathic parody of Madonna, who pursues Yancovic in the film, and Rainn Wilson (best known for his role as Dwight on NBC's sitcom "The Office") plays Dr. Demento, who gave Yankovic his first exposure on his syndicated comedy radio show in the late 1970s. If you've used your Roku within the last week, you've likely noticed the "Weird: Exclusive Experience" link in the home screen menu.
