Android Wear 2.0, also referred to as Google Wear (now known as Wear OS), is Google’s dedicated platform for smartwatches. A major upgrade to the OS in the form of Android Wear 2.0 was released in February of 2017. It’s a significant upgrade from the previous version, delivering support for standalone applications, Google Assistant, and smarter watch faces with extra features. It also improves notifications, the Google Fit app, and much more.
The biggest improvement is before mentioned standalone apps. This makes adding apps easier. It means you can have apps on your watch that aren’t on your smartphone. Not only will these standalone apps run faster on your watch than the phone apps, if you’re using an Apple iPhone, you’ll now be able to download apps to your Android Wear watch directly without the issue of app incompatibility. To update your existing smartwatch, go to Settings -> About -> System update.
